Student Teachers

Local school districts have no money. Voters are turning down propositions for increasing spending. The unions refuse to give enough concessions. The result is squeezing wherever the districts can squeeze. Unfortunatly for those trying to become teachers things just got worst in Medford NJ (where I live). Now the student teachers may have to PAY for the right to student teach.

  1. I can't even imagine how miserable the next generation of teachers are going to be. Requiring a person to pay $1200-$1500 for the crappy position of student teacher seems absolutely ridiculous, especially considering that their salaries after they get hired aren't cushioned. I don't know who in their right mind would want to pay to be a student teacher, they get treated worse than substitutes.

  2. If New Jersey is choosing to charge students to student teach, as the article said, "[NJ] may not have any next year." What makes even less sense is that having student teachers in schools helps the districts. If a school had more student teachers, there would be less need for assistant teacher. This is an area the schools could save money in. Furthermore, the more student teachers helps the schools in the long run because there will be more well prepared teachers for the work force. Currently, any college student with at least 60 credits in ant major can be a substitute teacher in NJ. You would think they would want substitutes who are already in the schools, will work for free and are better experienced and trained for teaching.

  3. The educational system is a nightmare and the sad part is the states keep amputating a little more off of the vital parts necessary to education (teachers). I shudder to think of what will happen when individuals who would be promising teachers decide that this is no longer a venue worth being a part of. Millions of hungry minds will fall to the way-side and than where will the future of education be. It seems to me the less education involved in the thought process the more worthless fighting will arise. Sharon L Schafer

  4. Students already have to pay enough for a college undergraduate tuition just to earn the credits to become a teacher and now New Jersey wants them to pay more? More students would be in debt, potentially prolonging them paying off their student loans. Placing a secure job as a teacher is difficult in itself with the teacher cuts recently, this would deter less students to pursue a teaching career. Education is the last place money should be taken from because it is the most important department. The teachers are important and they get their experience from student teaching. If a student cannot afford the expense of being allowed to student teach, they will not get the hands-on experience to become successful.

  5. This is unfair. Students already have to pay for the credits they receive while student teaching... That is struggle enough; student teaching is a full-time job with no pay. Now students will have to pay 2x to "earn" experience? No thanks! Glad I don't live there...
