The stimulus package after one year

This chart makes you wonder about the stimulus package’s effect on the economy. It comes from Greg Mankiw’s quest to keep our government accountable.

The most I know about the economy is what I observe for myself and hear in the news however, I can definitely believe this representation of unemployment in the US. According to Dr. Donald Wargo, one of Temple's Econ professors, stated that 8.5 million people have lost their jobs during the recession so far (Econ 1101 syllabus). The majority of my friends and their families have suffered from the recession, whether it has lead them to taking a semester/year off to work because of financial issues or their parents losing their jobs. My family, along with many others, have suffered some from the economy's current state. More and more adults come into my work and try to apply for any type of job they can get, even if we can only hire them for part time. It has definitely not been getting any better as far as I can see. Hopefully we'll see a change soon.

I think this is something all Americans need to see. This visual representation of the stimulous package shows it's progress, or lackthereof. Some families have experience unemployment first hand, but others may not know the reality of the issue. I think we definately need to get graphs like this out there for all to see, and as Americans, hold our government accountable for this. Our unemployment numbers with the stimulous package are above what they predicted at this time without the recovery plan, yet alone with it. If this recovery plan is not working, then I think we need to come up with a new recovery plan to follow through until we see progress.

I am not surprised by the Unemployment rate under the stimulus package. Before the stimulus package, President Barack Obama stated that conditions would get worse before they improved. I don't understand why some people think change will occur over night. As horrible as it feels to be in this predicament, we must be patient, but not passive of the role of the government or the intentions of the stimulus package. We can only hope things will happen sooner than later.

  4. This is a shocking image because it goes against what many politicians said it would. This creates a lack of faith in politicians economically speaking, yet these insecurities will protrude to other aspects of government and people will become very critical of every move. It is disappointing to realize that the stimulus package as of now seems to be a huge waste of money. The graph represents better than words can what was predicted to happen and what actually has happened.
